I chose this photo because of how it is composed. This photo is compelling because of the repetition of vertical lines and the angle of the photo because of the shallow depth of field. Light reflects off the metal in the background. The typewriter completely fills the frame of the photo, making the photo visually pleasing. This photo has a feeling of nostalgia. Typewriters, being something that many people don't use anymore, are beautiful objects to be captured. Every typewriter is different- whether it be its color, letter forms, or size, so every photo conveys a different glimpse of a piece of history.
(ISO 400, WB Fluorescent, 1/125, f/4) I chose this photo for many reasons. This old building with boarded up windows was in the Art District of Providence, which seems like the perfect place for it. From the tree branch coming from the corner of the photo to the modern cars on the street, this photo is composed of many contrasts. This photo has a sense of pattern, with the windows and the boarding of them creating shapes on the face of the building. This photo also uses the rule of thirds. Not only do the windows fill a grid but also the building design creates a grid on its own. This photo has a feeling of starting over. You would guess that from the boards on the windows that there was a fire in the building. The choice of putting this photo in black and white conveys the feeling that whatever happened to this building is in the past and that better things are coming.
(Large depth of field) I chose this photo because it is visually exciting. Although it may not be overwhelming to some people, it allows for many different focal points. Whether it be the buildings in the background, the bridge in the middle ground or the railing in the foreground, there is a lot for the viewer to look at. Putting this photo in black and white was to compensate for the lighting but since this is a city photo, it gives it a nice feel. This photo has a straight forward point of view. I was positioned up high to be able to look down on the river. The exposure of the photo is balanced between dark and light. This photo is appealing because it has leading lines and a large depth of field. Although imagine cities as busy places, this photo captures a quiet and tranquil scene.
(Large depth of field) Technical Aspects: Fluorescent lighting, shutter speed of 1/125, shallow depth of field (F/4)
Composition: Slightly angled, focal point is the skull and the shadow, framed with skull coming from side of the photo. Artistic Qualities: Although the skull is in the photo but what is being reflected is the rib cage. Feeling of mystery. Technical Aspects: Fluorescent lighting, slightly overexposed, shutter speed of 1/125
Composition: Angled point of view, focal point of double exposure of skull over my face, framed in the center of the photo Artistic Qualities: Double exposure of skull over my face lined up with my skull itself, "exposing" my skull. Interesting to come from the side, showing jaw/teeth. Serious facial expression and dark background creates somber tone. Technical Aspects: Shutter speed of 1/15. Slightly overexposed to give more eerie effect. Use of stage lighting.
Composition: Straight-forward point of view, but focal point is coming from the side of the photo. Artistic Qualities: This photo was entirely unexpected. While testing the shutter speed, I moved and the camera had captured two of me. The use of black and white made the photo more compelling and can make people feel uncomfortable. it is interesting that I come closer to the camera through the frame of the photo. |
Extended Portfolio
Composition
This photo creates nice lines within the shadow of the skeleton. Not only on the background but also the bones of the skeleton itself. The use of positive and negative space (both of the background and between the bones of the skeleton) create an interesting composition and lead the viewer's eye to many different areas of the photo. The repetition of the photo also creates an interesting photo.
Technical Aspects
The shutter speed of this photo was 1/500 (making it a fast shutter speed), there was a large depth of field and the ISO was set at 1200. The white balance was fluorescent. The light is positioned to the left of the skeleton to illuminate its face and to cast the shadow on the background. The contrast between the brightness of the bones and the darkness of the skeleton creates an interesting composition. The focus of this photo could either be the skeleton or its shadow.
Artistic Qualities
The subject matter of this photo may seem mysterious or spooky but it is actually kind of funny. The way the skeleton is looking off to the side and the way the light casts on its face make it seem like the skeleton is in deep thought, or worrying about something but really, what does a skeleton have to worry about? This photo would have been more comical with props such as a top hat or a monocle. The point of view interesting because what you see is not what the shadow shows. You see the upper body of the skeleton but the shadow casts the ribs and down the spine to the lower back.

Composition
The composition of this photo was slightly unexpected. Because it is of water, you never really know how the photo will come out. Luckily, this one came out nicely. It creates a nice pattern of the ripples in the water and you get the contrast of the smooth, yet jagged edges of the rock to the right. You also get the texture of the bubbles in the water as the waves wash off the shore.
Technical Aspects
The shutter speed for this photo was 1/600, as it had to be fast to capture the waves. The depth of field was large to capture the waves and the rocks around and under them. The ISO was set at 300 as it was sunny outside. The white balance was set for direct sunlight.
Artistic Qualities
There is nothing to special about this photo. The colors between the white rock and the moss covered rocks create a nice contrast against the deep blue of the waves. The mood could put across as deep thought as some people tend to go to the ocean or the beach when they want to clear their minds or to be by themselves.

Composition
The composition of this photo is tied together by the bokeh of the light shining off of the water. Although this photo is out of focus, from that you get the bokeh. The depth of field for this photo is a large depth of field. The framing of this photo is interesting because you get the horizon in the background but you also get the shore to the left of the photo. The horizon creates a leading line across the background of the photo.
Technical Aspects
The shutter speed of this photo, although blurry, was 1/600. The photo is blurry because I put the camera into manual focus and purposely did not focus the photo. The ISO was set to 1200 and the white balance was set for direct sunlight. The lighting is bright in the middle of the photo because the sun is shining off the water but then it is dark around the sides and in the background.
Artistic Qualities
The bokeh of this photo is what makes it interesting. As you normally see bokeh created by headlights or Christmas lights, this photo is different because the bokeh is created by the light shining off the ripples of the waves in the water.

Composition
The lines in this photo create leading lines and a sense of repetition. With the lines on the side of the drain creating leading lines and the lines within the drain creating repeating lines, this photo is tied together by the lines in it. The texture of the track on either side of the photo also gives it more depth. The point of view is interesting as I was laying on the ground to get the effect of leading lines.
Technical Aspects
The shutter speed of the photo was set at 1/500. It has a large depth of field and the ISO was set to 3600. The white balance was set for direct sunlight. The lighting is bright in the background of the photo but gradually gets darker in the foreground of the photo.
Artistic Qualities
The point of view is interesting in this photo, again creating the leading lines to draw the eye of the viewer throughout the photo.
